Spectacularly shallow and uncritical authors have produced a critical thinking guide. The editino irrational nature of the human. All ignored for a comfortable and stupid “now I know”.

I need this book for my Critical Thinking: Parks and Recreation esition. We only read chapters excluding 7 and chapter I didn’t think I learned a lot from this class, but in retrospect, I did, especially the parts about the logical fallacies.

Not that I would have told her that: And I’m not saying what happened in Baltimore months ago wasn’t tragic, just that her personal line of thinking had a common fallacy. But it is always nice when you can directly apply something you have learned from a textbook to real life.

I got the most out of the logical fallacies chapters, but this textbook was helpful and I did take something back from it. The Noida double murder case refers to the unsolved murders of year-old girl Aarushi Talwar and year-old Hemraj Banjadea male live-in domestic worker employed by her family. The two were killed on the night of 15—16 May at Aarushi’s home in NoidaIndia.

The case aroused public interest as a whodunit story, and received heavy media coverage. The sensational media coverage, which included salacious allegations against Aarushi and the suspects, was criticized aarushj many as a trial jusgement media.

When Aarushi’s body was discovered on 16 May, the missing servant Hemraj was considered as the main suspect. However, the next day, his partially decomposed body was discovered on the terrace. The police were heavily criticized for failing to secure the crime scene immediately.

After ruling out the family’s ex-servants, the police considered Aarushi’s parents—Dr. Rajesh Talwar and Nupur Talwar—as the prime suspects. The police suspected that Rajesh had murdered the two after finding them in an “objectionable” position, or aaruehi Rajesh’s alleged extra-marital affair had led to his blackmail by Judgment and a confrontation with Aarushi. The accusations enraged the Talwars’ family and friends, who accused the police of framing the Talwars in order to cover up the botched-up investigation.

Jjudgement case was then transferred to the CBIwhich exonerated the parents and suspected the Talwars’ assistant Krishna Thadarai and two domestic servants—Rajkumar and Vijay Mandal. Based on the ‘narco’ interrogation conducted on the three men, the CBI suspected that they had killed Aarushi after an attempted sexual assault, and Hemraj for being a witness. Judtement CBI was accused of using dubious methods to extract a confession, and all the three men were released after it could not find any solid evidence against them.

Inaarusni CBI handed over the investigation to a new team, which recommended closing the case due to critical gaps in the casee.

Based on circumstantial evidenceit named Rajesh Talwar as the sole suspect, but refused to charge him due to lack of any hard evidence.

The parents opposed the closure, calling CBI’s suspicion on Rajesh as baseless. Subsequently, a special CBI court rejected the CBI’s claim that there was not enough evidence, and ordered proceedings against the Talwars. In Novemberthe parents were convicted and sentenced to life imprisonmentbut many critics argued that the judgment was based on weak evidence. The Talwars challenged the decision in the Allahabad High Court.

Finally, on 12 Octoberthe court acquitted them, calling the evidence against them unsatisfactory and severely criticising the police, CBI and the media for not having investigated the murder properly. The case remains unsolved. She was the daughter of a dentist couple, Dr.

Rajesh Talwar and Dr. jjdgement

Rajesh and Nupur practiced together at their clinic in Sector 27 of Noida. They also saw patients at the Fortis Hospitalwhere Rajesh headed the dental department. Anita and Praful Durrani, another dentist couple and close family friends of the Talwars, lived in the same city. The couple shared the Noida clinic with the Talwars: Rajesh and Anita worked at the clinic in the morning 9ampmwhile Praful and Nupur worked there in the evening 5pm-7pm.

Yam Prasad Banjade, better known as Hemraj, was the Talwar family’s live-in domestic help and cook. He belonged to a Brahmin family of Dharapani village in the Arghakhanchi district of Nepal.

Rajesh and Nupur slept in the master bedroomwhile Aarushi slept in an adjacent room. The entrance to the Talwars’ apartment at Jalvayu Vihar had three doors: On 16 Maythe family’s housemaid Bharati Mandal 35 rang their doorbell around 6 am. She had been employed six days earlier. She later stated that she tried pushing the outermost gate, but it did not open. After Bharati rang the doorbell a third time, Nupur opened the innermost wooden door. Speaking through the mesh of the middle grill door, she told Bharati that this door was locked from outside.

She asked Bharati about the whereabouts of Hemraj. When Bharati said that she had no idea, Nupur remarked that Hemraj must have gone outside to fetch milk and must have locked the door from outside. She asked Bharati to wait outside until Hemraj returned. Nupur asked her to go downstairs so that she could throw the keys to her from the balcony. Nupur then called Hemraj’s mobile phone, but the call was abruptly cut. When she tried calling him again, the phone appeared to have been switched off.

Nupur then threw the keys down to Bharati. According to the Talwars, hudgement this time, Rajesh also woke up. He entered the living room and saw a near-empty Scotch whisky bottle on the dining table, which surprised him. He asked Nupur who had kept the bottle there, and then alarmed, asked her to check Aarushi’s room.

Aarushi’s room had a self-locking door, and it would generally be locked. It could be opened only from inside or from outside with a key. But the couple found it unlocked on that morning. When they entered the room, they saw Aarushi’s dead body lying on her bed. Rajesh started screaming, while Nupur remained silent due to shock, according to her.

Meanwhile, Bharati returned to the outermost gate: She found that the middle door was latched, fase not locked. She opened the latch and walked in.

Nupur asked her to come inside Aarushi’s room. Bharati stood at the entrance of the room, as Nupur walked inside. Aarushi’s body lay on her bed; it was covered with a flannel blanket. Nupur pulled the blanket, and Bharati saw that Aarushi’s throat was slit.

Both the parents blamed Hemraj for Aarushi’s murder in front of the maid. Bharati walked out of the apartment to inform the neighbours. She returned to the house and asked the Talwars if they wanted her to do the daily household chores.

When they said “No”, she moved on to work in other households. The Talwars called their family and friends.

Puneesh Rai Tandon, a neighbour who lived one floor below the Talwars, asked iudgement Jalvayu Vihar security guard Virendra Singh to inform the police. The crime scene had been “completely trampled upon”. On 16 May, the missing servant Hemraj was the prime suspect. In his police complaint, Rajesh blamed Hemraj for his daughter’s murder.

The police suspected that Hemraj entered Aarushi’s room in an inebriated state after consuming Scotch whisky, and tried to sexually assault her. When she resisted, he killed her with a kukri judgemnet Nepali knife. Aarushi’s body was taken for post-mortem around 8: Rajesh’s brother Dinesh Talwar, his driver Umesh Sharma and his childhood friend Ajay Chadha accompanied the constables. Around 1 pm, Aarushi’s body was brought home and placed on ice caes in the living room.

It was taken for cremation at the Antim Niwas crematorium around 4 pm. In addition, the police confirmed that the body was not needed for any further examination. The police later alleged that the Talwars’ domestic staff showed undue haste in cleaning Aarushi’s room. A part of Aarushi’s blood-stained mattress was cut out and sent to the forensics lab along with her pillow, bed sheet and clothes. Vikas Sethi later testified that he, along with three others, tried to dump the remaining part of the mattress on the terrace, but found it locked.

An old lady then told him to put the mattress on the neighbouring terrace. Rajesh’s driver Sharma then asked the neighbour Puneesh Tandon for the key to his terrace. Earlier, at 4 pm also, Sharma had asked Tandon for the key, saying that he needed to dump the ice brought for Aarushi’s body.

This time, Tandon opened the terrace himself. Sharma, Sethi and two others dragged the mattress to his terrace. Tandon then locked the terrace door. None of them aaruhi the body of Hemraj, which was lying on the adjacent terrace, separated by a grilled wall.

On the morning of 16 May, the visitors to the Talwars’ house noticed some bloodstains on the terrace door handle. Rajesh’s former colleagues Rajiv Kumar Varshney and Rohit Kochhar later told the police that they saw bloodstains on the terrace door, its lock and the staircase leading aarush the terrace. While visiting the Talwars’ house, Varshney had taken the stairs to the terrace by mistake.

Kocchar stated that the bloodstains on the terrace door were brought to the attention of a police constable named Akhilesh Kumar. Praful Durrani, who also visited the house, claimed that the policeman initially dismissed the spot on the terrace door as rust, and was also dismissive of the bloodstains on the floor. According to Varshney, the police told him that the killer must have tried to escape through or hide weapon on the terrace, but returned after finding it locked.

Rohit Kochhar later testified that when a policeman asked Rajesh for the terrace key, he “went into the house and did not come out for a long time. SP Mahesh Mishra testified that he had asked the terrace door to be opened on 16 May. However, his subordinates told him that Rajesh Talwar couldn’t find the key and they couldn’t find a mechanic judgementt break open the door. Several visitors aarusih to arrive at the Talwars’ house which was being managed by Dinesh Talwar with their condolences.

I think that privilege gives us not only a responsibility, but the way I see it an opportunity, to help those around us who face inequity, injustice and deprivation. And I do believe, that if each of us does whatever we can, within our capability, capacity and our constraints, to reach out to even one of our fellow underprivileged citizens, it can make an enormous difference to our country.

My congratulations to all of you who azi graduating speedh. Let me also congratulate this excellent institute where you have been studying. In the past two decades, very few high quality academic institutions have been built in India, and ISB has definitely proved itself to be pfemji the leaders. Today as I stand here I recall a personal incident from way back pertaining to another excellent business school like this one.

azin It was in the mids Wipro was a small company making vegetable oils. We had just begun to diversify into manufacturing soap. I was then about as old as some of you are today.

I realised early that if Wipro had to grow we had to build a good team. Suffice it to say we were not taken seriously. I was not even given a chance to have a dialogue with the students.

We iij tried at other good institutions azzim TISS. It started with a couple of people, and then over a period of time, the trickle became a steady stream. By the early s, we were being invited to all the top business school campuses for recruitment. Business school graduates who joined us were given a clear understanding of the company they were joining. That brings me to my next point. The point is about the critical importance of things that we consider ordinary.

Azim Premji @ ISB: Success comes from the ordinary

I n the world of today, we seem to be caught with the notions of the extraordinary. My experience suggests that this is quite wrong. Innovation, big-ideas, being different, all speecch a place — and sometimes can be very important. However what really builds and sustains success, are the much ignored ordinary things.

The premjii ordinary things that we often don’t pay enough attention to, but which I believe are the drivers of all success are: As I look back at the past years of Wipro, I can hardly remember any decisive turning point that came from some single big idea or great innovation.

Everything was built with steady, painstaking work.

Azim Premji’s speech at IIM Calcutta Convocation

No innovation or big idea can compensate for lack of hard work and perseverance, but I have experienced that often hard work and perseverance can compensate for most other things. I talked about my experience with Wipro on this issue; I can also refer to my experience with people.

Over the years I have been privileged to have met and worked with some of the most successful people in the world. L astly, I would like to share with you two ordinary events from a different sphere. In one of the villages which we visited, the government school had organised a ‘baal mela’, a children’s fair.

But when we remember that this was a small village of marginal farmers, in one of the most backward areas of the country, ilm most of the children were first generation school goers in speech families, it was very gratifying to see. It was an eye opener as to the resilient spirit of our people, which can be sparked with just the little intervention from outside.

From the baal mela, we went to visit another government school where we shared the mid-day-meal with the children. How distant the world of those children eating the Rs 3.

It is very much part of our world and one which we often find it easier not to see. There is extraordinary inequality, deprivation and injustice all around us, and I think we need to be conscious of this reality, because it is highly intelligent and capable people like you who are key to making our country better.

I don’t think this will happen just by each one of us doing their job well. That may be a good place to start, but I think it is necessary to have some genuine social engagement.

You may ask why? I don’t have a simple, compelling answer. To me, it seems that all of us here are privileged, some more some less.

Azim Premji exhorts management graduates to focus on ‘ordinary things’ – Business News

It’s a great pleasure to be here with you. At that time that meant the IIM Ahmedabad. That was the first time we tried and we came back empty handed. But I did not relent and I also did not change what I was saying about the company. I presented Wipro with absolute candour, which I have continued to do. We made sure that they knew exactly what Wipro stood for. Many of them played a determining role in shaping Wipro. Please click NEXT to continue reading What is clearly common to all these people is what I have called the ordinary things.

Many of them have startling brilliance or extraordinary creativity, but these are just flashes. What makes them what they are, is hard-work, perseverance and basic honesty. Surpur is a block head quarter in Yadgir district in north Karnataka. The sense of excitement was infectious.

The entire village had been involved in organising the fair. There was enormous enthusiasm. The fair was full of models and charts to explain various concepts in science. The school teachers were running around busily. What amazed me was the passion with which the entire village was engaged with the event.

It was simple and tasty food. This meal is prepared at a budget allocation of Rs 3. I was told that they were siblings who were too little to be in school. Live like Steve Jobs: Speeches to inspire you Must Read! Pranab Mukherjee’s advice to young Indians.

Definitely have to recommend this book for these reasons. First the author beah the story in a unique fashion exhibiting great thought continually surprising his readers.

I kept asking myself is there any way Beah would have thought of this. Secondly, it offers an imaginative trip through North Africa with the Foreign Legion, truly exciting.

Third, a mystery that you cannot guess how it will play out and the reason for it. I would give it a 5 star rating except for the last part of the book which sort of drags on in the desert of N.

It doesn’t last long enough to get irritated but it could have been lessened. Yes, by all means it is thoroughly enjoyable. This is a novel I first read in seventh grade, that is actually a better read decades later! It not only is a solid mystery and adventure; but for those who love the English language, it is loaded with subtle puns and plays on words. Considering the period in which it was written, there are some anachronistic words and phrases; but if you read it on a Kindle or other device with an online dictionary, it actually makes it more fun to read.

Throw in the occasional French or Latin phrase and by the end of the book you’ve received quite an education! One caution – there is a bit of racism and jingoism typical of the English Empire during this period. But if you can get past that, it is a rollicking good adventure. Beau Geste is a ripping good yarn, well-written, well-plotted, thoroughly stirring. I would suggest it to mature readers as a great piece of escapist literature.

One person found this helpful. The only part of the story that stayed with me through all the subsequent years was the Fort Zinderneuf under-siege sequence, which is a marvelous tale in its own right. So I had forgotten what a fun and entertaining read P. This is such a riveting read, not only for the story, but it’s a time capsule of the s, when it was first wgen.

Accordingly sren very much has its own vocabulary, borrowing extensively from French, and three young upper class Brits in those days exchanged dialogue in a jolly delightful way. But do be prepared: Again, because this was written in a different age, many of the words, jargon, and slogans are jarring, and very politically incorrect. One star off due to this absolutely revolting Munsey’s edtion.

The type ebau is an eyesore and the margins literally go right into the binding. Very tricky to read. If you get the chance to obtain a different edition I very much recommend doing so; otherwise get ready for one grand adventure.

Mikels, Author, The Reckoning. I had seen many of the beste as a kid, so I thought I should get the rest of the story by reading the book. Well, I was delightfully surprised by the book. The book was much more mysterious and intriguing then the movies. I liked the way the plot developed but the brothers seemed to age a lot more or maybe just matured more as the book went on. When you first meet them in Beau Geste and his band everyone comes across as if they were teenagers but within a couple of days after the disappearance of the blue water when the brothers join the legion you find out that they are all in their early 20s.

The time in the legion seems longer too like almost 4 years but at the end of the story it’s about half as long as that. The one thing about the version of the book I was reading neau was the one with the pictures from the film was that there were no maps. So what I did was as I followed the brothers I would go on mapquest and print a map of the area and trace their route. Then I would fold it and keep it at that point in the book. I like the fact that they kept many of the terms in the native tongue.

I have word and there are these downloads free from Microsoft that you can download so that you can translate in to many different languages. Between making the maps and figuring out the translations it made the book much more adventurous for me.

I did not know much about the history of Algeria and I did not realize that the French had fought with the Arabs in Northern Africa for many generations. The Arabs are pretty stereotyped but there is the fact that the brothers learn Arabic to keep their minds sharp and this helps them down the road.

I did not realize that Arabic languages were spoken all along North Africa and that it is mostly heste. I thought that was more of the Middle East. You will notice that all the bad guys seem to be of the same nationality either being French like Legume or Italian like Bondini as opposed to the good guys being the English and the Americans.

I like the fact that the American’s were Texas Rangers because I think that is how the rest of the world perceives us. Buddy and Hank might have been caricatures but they were always honest and true just like the English characters of John, Digby and Michael were proper and honorable. The best part of the book was after the Fort at Beay because you really don’t see that part bewu the movies and you see how John, Digby, Buddy and Hank try to help each other to get to the English city of Kano in Nigeria.

I really wanted to know what happened to one of the Americans but I won’t give that away. At the end of the book I thought that I had everything figured out and I would know what Michael’s letter was going to say but I was pretty surprise and it made me enjoy the overall theme of the novel.

I would recommend this book to anyone who likes adventure novels about far away places. See all reviews. What other items do customers buy after viewing this item? There’s a problem loading this menu right now. Learn more about Amazon Prime.

Generally, poverty is defined as the lack of opportunities for people to meet their basic needs.

Poverty affects all segments of society, especially women and children. Women are more affected by poverty because they have unequal access to rights and opportunities in all aspects of social life such as education, health care, employment and participation in decision-making. Since the problem is increasing day by day and affects more and more women, poverty has become a global problem more than a problem of countries.

In the elderly, it causes osteoporosis, staying alone, lack of access to health care due to social insecurity. In this context, the role of nurses is evident in management of the poverty, which is a factor affecting health.
