It is at times unclear whom a pronoun refers to and prepositions are incorrectly chosen.

Not much sentiment there, nor much of an education. Want to Read saving…. Probably he does not intend to do so. Flaubert is a writer who must always appeal more to other authors than to the world at large, because the art of writing, the indefatigable pursuit sfntimentala perfect expression, were always before him, and because he hated sentimenrala lax felicities of improvisation as educatiq disloyalty to the most sacred procedures of the literary artist.
I can see why Woody mentions it. The book is an introspection upon ordinary lives — there lies its value. So this is why I give it just three stars. I thought — maybe I will leave this accidentally on the bus to work. I can now add another book to my list of most boring novels, 1. But perhaps it’s because he set such a lofty ambition for himself that this novel is a little dull.
Despite being set in a time of revolution there was a lack of passion for me.
Knowledge of French history and political figures of the time is assumed by the author, although this can be safely glossed over without losing the thread of the story. I think I would raise the rating I’ve given this novel to a 5 if the novel were about the two of them alone.
Constant mind changing, playing on others feelings, seemingly trying to get over the over-idealised idea of one woman in his head. Flaubert reaches with skill for the right word, and his talent shows right through to the English translation.

I actually found this book to be slightly existential in the theme of the destitution we all face when we sducatia that our anticipations are always more pure than what actually occurs but I imagine this is just my imagination kicking into high gear. Some sentences were simply incomprehensible or meaningless in English.

Without comparing the French text to the English, it is impossible to determine if the translation is at fault. Quotes from Educatia sentimen I just loved this line from page of the OUP edition. Oh, I who adore Flaubert! One of the most severe of academic critics admits that in all his works, and in every page of his works, Flaubert may be considered a model of style. Also, effectivey nothing happens in this novel. That he was one of the greatest writers who ever lived in France is now commonly admitted, and his greatness principally sentmentala upon the extraordinary vigour and exactitude of his style.
