Lydia strikes first and hard and uses her superior maneuverability to great advantage, but the Spanish ship’s more numerous and heavier guns are telling and Lydia is dismasted.
Hornblower has correctly determined the Spanish captain’s course and as dawn breaks the two ships again join in combat although the wind dies to a dead calm. Paperbackpages. It has a smaller dose of naval jargon, which I might have once welcomed, but the simplified treatment of life on board HM frigate Lydia seems like a cop-out or a charicature.
By this time in the story, we know that Bush is Horbnlower’s best friend, and was Best Man at Hornblower’s wedding, while they have served together in other ships. The action scenes really make the reader feel like they’re right there on the deck, feeling every cannon blast, gripped with the roller-coaster ride of alternating anticipation and terror of exchanging gunfire with a rival ship.
