This is a collection of articles, not a novel.
If you love food and are looking for new recipes and the Mexican culture, you sucu, encias enjoy this book. When I originally found this book in the library, I believe it was fate. I had opened the book briefly and fell in love with the drawings that appeared on each side and bottom of every page. I then took the book home and randomly opened the book to Laura Esquivel’s piece “Oaxacan Black Mole”.
Let it henceforth be known that I will laurra near and far for the chance of meeting delicious mole- red, green, Oaxacan Black, whichever. However, I love the stories that surround Oaxacan Black Mole in par When I originally found this book in the library, I believe it was fate. However, I love the stories that surround Oaxacan Black Mole in particular. I have heard many stories about how recipes are passed from one magical cook to the next with the number of ingredients ranging from something to So, when I saw esquibel this book included a story about Oaxacan Black Mole, I couldn’t wait to begin reading.
I did enjoy this account of Mole, as well as the rest of the book, yet my favorites were esuqivel with Chiles”, “Lowfat Mayonnaise”, and “Apolonio”. To me, in these particular stories the author’s sense of humor, connection to others and food, as well as her cleverly hidden acerbic wit, shine.
A wonderful idea – but too much repetition I was keen to read what sounded a fascinating concept after thoroughly enjoying Laura Esquivel’s novel ‘Pierced by the Sun’ but, sadly, was not so enamoured with this book. Some of the articles are quite interesting, but after a couple of chapters the material seems rather repetitive. If the reader had been provided with an indication of the context of each piece – all of which have been published elsewhere – I think this would have added to the value of A wonderful idea – but too much repetition I was keen to read what sounded a fascinating concept after thoroughly enjoying Laura Esquivel’s novel ‘Pierced by the Sun’ but, sadly, was not so enamoured with this book.
If the reader had been provided with an indication of the context of each piece – all of which have been published elsewhere – I think this would have added to the value of the collection. The design and layout of the book cannot be faulted; the line drawings, which wrap around the page, are fabulous. If you subscribe to Kindle Unlimited it is worth borrowing the book to read ‘Apple Soup’ and to look at the illustrations.
Íntimas suculencias: Tratrado filosófico de cocina by Laura Esquivel
I am afraid that for once I did not finish the book, although I had found the premise so attractive. Don’t let this review put scuulencias off the author – as I mentioned before, her novel ‘Pierced by the Sun’ is a very kaura 4 star lauga. Laura Esquivel has an uncanny, incomparable ability to perfectly depict the heart of a family; the preparation of delicious, homely food in the kitchen.
I truly enjoyed her candor when sharing personal anecdotes. Between Two Fires is a charming collection of Laura Esquivel’s thoughts on the intersection of food, culture and the modern world, which are illustrated with these quirky drawings about Mexican life. Esquivel really delves into her thought process in connecting food to romance, the basic idea behind her hit book Como Agua Para Chocolate.
Esquivel believes that food is one of the roots of Mexican Between Two Fires is a charming collection of Laura Esquivel’s thoughts on the intersection of food, culture and the modern world, which are illustrated with these quirky drawings about Mexican life. Esquivel believes that food is one of lauar roots of Mexican culture because suuclencias connects people with the past through ingredients and the communal act of sharing a meal.
Love both familial and romantic is passed through cooking. She is also emphatic about this idea of the “New Man” – when culture will reject its complicated, fast-paced lifestyle for the simplicity and ideals of the past. I read the translated version so it’s impossible to tell if Esquivel is being genuine or sarcastic, but either way, it left suculenciws bad taste in my mouth.
Esquivel does show her depth as a writer, however, by being able to transition from writing from romance to the silly, yet meaningful tales of Manchamanteles and Apolonio. The only thing that is stopping me from giving this book 4 stars is that the prologues lack context without the full text attached.
Cute book with recipes, musings, nice writing.

I was very excited when I received this book from Good Reads. Laura Esquivel is one of my favorite authors and this book is truly a gift. I had read some of the texts before but there were quite a few that were new to me. The recipes were an added bonus, I could suculenccias taste them as I read.
After finishing this lovely book, I had to go and find all of her other books on my bookshelves and reread them. This is lauea a book I will give away – loans only! I purchased additional copies for my mother a I was very excited when I received this book from Good Reads.

I purchased additional copies for my mother and daughter. I was unpleasantly surprised by the book I rarely read short stories, but this was a compilation of thoughts, feelings and no stories.
Frequent reference to ” Like Water for Chocolate” made me rsquivel at least watch the movie and I disliked it. The movie, assuming it is close to the book, is an “acquired taste”, just like the ethnic food. I’m very disappointed that the 1st book I received as giveaway, was this book This book was zuculencias interesting blend of Ancient and more recent Mexican history, an autobiography of the author and short stories, combined with recipes for food and how food affects our lives, and excerpts from her most famous book “Like Water for Chocolate”.
She has a great way of thinking esp when she compares the making of bread to religion. I’m reading a translation, so that could be the problem, but I can’t seem to agree with anything the author is saying. It’s rubbing me in all sorts of wrong ways. Sad, given that the author’s Like Water for Chocolate is a book I love and a book she makes frequent references to in paura book. It sounds more like a philosophy treatise than a memoir.
I might go back to it someday, but not just yet. Jun 26, Ruth Santana Valencia rated it really liked it Shelves: Cuentos cortos, algunos mejores que otros sin mucha relevancia.
La riqueza literaria de Esquivel es impoluta, aunque esperaba mas. I wish Laura Esquivel could meet my Mom – they’d have lots of food-related things to talk about. Front matter has usual disclaimer “this esquivell a work of fiction This is NOT a work of fiction: Occasional pieces may be fiction, but not most. This book is basically a collection of 14 short speeches and introductions and forwards written by Esquivel for recipes or others’ books.
The stories are interesting and well written and the pages are beautifully illustrated. It probably takes about an hour to read so it’s good for light reading. The writing is great but the disjointed stories in this collection disappoint more than they satisfy. Like Water for Chocolate is one of my favorite books, but this collection really fell short for me.

Some essays were more compelling to me than others and I wish there had been more to it. However, I enjoy Esquivel’s point of view and her writing style. There are no discussion topics on this book yet. In both books she manages to incorporate her teaching abilities by giving her readers lessons about life.
During an on-line Salon interview with Joan Smith, she said, “As a teacher I realize that what one learns in school doesn’t serve for very much at all, that the only thing one can really learn is self understanding and this is something that can’t be taught.
